Rajkot: History, Culture & Industrial Growth

Rajkot city was founded by Thakorji Vibhji in the year 1610 and he ruled over an area of about 282 square miles. In 1720, Naib Subehdar Masum Khan of the Sorath Regiment defeated the ruler and renamed Rajkot as Masumabad. Then in the year 1732, the son of the deposed ruler Mermanji avenged his father’s defeat by defeating Masum Khan and renamed it again as Rajkot. Rajkot was connected to Wankaner through railway in the year 1889. In 1893, a rail link was established between Rajkot and Jetalsar.

During that time, meter gauge trains were mostly used and formed the main lifeline of transportation in the areas. In 1925, Mahatma Gandhi first visited the city and established the first educational activities there. Today, it is a well-established centre for rural industries. The Father of the Nation of India, Mahatma Gandhi, spent the early years of his life in Rajkot, where his father served as the Diwan.

In 1937, Vadhera again protested against the atrocities of Diwan Virawad and started the first Satyagraha. And this was finally resolved by Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. Eventually, this resolution was postponed to a later stage and with this development, Mahatma Gandhi started a hunger strike to reject this move. The Quit India movement from 1942 was also a major contributor to Rajkot becoming a major hub for its development.

As per the 2011 census, Rajkot district has a population of 37,99,770, which is equal to the population of Liberia or the state of Oregon in the United States. The city itself contributes significantly to the development of the state’s economy with the help of small and heavy industries under the Gujarat Industrial Development Corporation (GIDC) and Gujarat State Finance Corporation (GSFC).

4 GIDCs are currently functioning in the district. In the city, Kaba Gandhi’s Delo, National School – Mahatma Gandhi High School, Rajkumar College, Lalpari Lake, Madhavraya Scindia Cricket Ground have historical values. Apart from this, there are many places worth visiting which are enough to give Rajkot the identity of colorful Rajkot.
