Surendranagar was named after King Surendrasinhji. The city was earlier known as Wadhwan, which was a historical city of the region. Wadhwan was already a center of trade and cultural activities in the state. Later, when the area developed administratively, its name was changed to Surendranagar.
The history of Surendranagar region is thousands of years old and it has been a part of Saurashtra region. The remains of Indus Valley Civilization and other ancient civilizations have also been found on this land.
In ancient times, the region was under the rule of various dynasties, including the Maurya, Gurjar-Pratihara, Chalukya (Solanki) and Rajput dynasties.
From the 13th to the 17th century, the region was under the influence of several Muslim rulers and the Marathas. During this period, the Mughals and the Sultans of Gujarat were also influential.
At this time, trade activities in Wadhwan and the surrounding areas increased rapidly, and the area became a major hub of trade routes, trading silk, cotton, and jewelry, making it a prosperous area.
During the British rule, the Wadhwan and Surendranagar areas were developed for railway and administrative activities.
In the 19th century, the British government developed it as its own camp, which led to an increase in military activities here. During this time, a railway junction was also built here, which made it more commercially important.
During the British rule, this area was also active in the freedom struggle and the citizens here participated in the freedom struggle.
After India gained independence in 1947, Surendranagar became a part of the state of Gujarat, Surendranagar was made the district headquarters and developed administratively and industrially.
Cotton production, salt production and ceramic industries developed rapidly in this region, currently, this district is famous for its plastic industry, textile industry and salt production.
There are many famous Jain temples in Surendranagar and Wadhwan. The Jain temples here are famous for their architecture and religious significance.
